Prime Minister Modi to Officially Open Mizoram's First Significant Railway Line in the Upcoming Week

Prime Minister Modi to launch Mizoram's first significant railway project next week.

Next week, Mizoram will be connected to India's national railway network as Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurates the Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025. This significant development promises cheaper travel, easier freight movement, and an overall boost to Mizoram's economy.

The new broad-gauge line, constructed at a cost of INR 5,021 crore, is a 51.38-kilometre stretch featuring 55 major bridges, with the longest measuring approximately 1.3 kilometres. The line includes 48 tunnels spanning a total of 12.85 kilometres, with the longest tunnel stretching 1.37 kilometres.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line integrates Mizoram with Silchar in Assam through the Bhodahpur Junction. The line also includes four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang-Sihhmui. The tallest bridge on the line, the Krung Bridge at Sairang, stands 114 metres above the ground, while the tallest pier, P-4 of bridge number 162, reaches 104 metres.

The new railway line is expected to reduce travel time from Silchar to Aizawl to just three hours. This will revolutionise transportation in the region, making it more convenient and affordable for the people of Mizoram.

The Minister of Transport, Ashwini Vaishnaw, will also be opening a new railway station in Mizoram on the same day. This development is a significant step towards modernising transportation in Mizoram and connecting it more closely with the rest of India.

Indian Railways plans to extend similar connectivity to Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Sikkim by 2030. This ambitious project promises to transform the North-Eastern region of India, making it more accessible and integrated with the rest of the country.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway project is expected to boost trade, tourism, and socio-economic development in Mizoram. By making it easier and more affordable to transport goods and people, the railway line will open up new opportunities for businesses and tourism in the region. This will contribute to the overall growth and development of Mizoram and its economy.

Currently, most essential goods in Mizoram are transported by road from Silchar. The Bairabi-Sairang railway line promises to make this process more efficient and cost-effective, benefiting both the people of Mizoram and the businesses that serve them.

In conclusion, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line is a significant development for Mizoram and the North-Eastern region of India. By connecting Mizoram to India's national railway network, this project promises to revolutionise transportation in the region, boost trade, tourism, and socio-economic development, and contribute to the overall growth and development of Mizoram and its economy.
