Production hall fire reported at Herdecke location

On Friday, August 29, a significant fire broke out at an industrial facility located on Wetterstraße in Herdecke, Germany. The fire department was alerted to the incident at around 8:07 PM.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the production hall heavily smoked, with an oven where plastics were burning identified as the source of the fire. The complex layout of the production hall and the fire's spread through a ventilation system made it challenging to contain.

Despite the challenges, the fire department, with the assistance of 132 firefighters from nine regional fire departments, managed to bring the fire under control by 12:24 AM. The Johanniter accident assistance set up additional provisions and rest areas at the scene, and the affected company provided drinks and snacks for the firefighters.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident. As a precaution, the population was informed about a possible odor nuisance via the NINA warning app, but there was no danger to the residents. After further measures, including cooling the ventilation system, an all-clear was given for the population at 1:19 AM.

The incident commander, Michael Tillmanns, thanked all those involved for their cooperation. Representatives of the affected company also expressed their thanks. Kreisbrandmeister Martin Weber praised the close cooperation of the fire departments and other aid organizations.

The police suspect that the cause of the fire on Wetterstraße was a fire originating from an oven where plastics were burning, as the smoke development came from that oven and the fire then spread through an exhaust system. After the cleanup, the scene was handed over to the police for further investigation.

In a separate incident, firefighters were also called to another location on Millöckerweg, where a fire alarm had been triggered. The cause of the fire on Millöckerweg was determined to be burnt food.

The Hattingen fire department took over a fire safety watch and handed it over to the company around 4:40 AM. At the moment, no information on the extent of the property damage or the exact cause of the fire is available.
