In the heart of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on August 30, 2025, a significant medical outreach was held in the Sauka community, Airport Road. Led by Dr. Emeka Ayogu, Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, FCT (NMA-FCT), this outreach was part of the association's 2025 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference activities.

Over 200 residents of Sauka community benefited from the outreach, receiving free treatment for a variety of health conditions. These included hypertension, diabetes, malaria, diarrhea, peptic ulcer disease, respiratory tract infections, musculoskeletal pain, common infections, eye conditions, and more.

Dr. Ayogu emphasized the importance of preventing lifestyle-related diseases, such as diabetes, through better habits. He also called for FCT residents to be vigilant and proactive about their health. In a bid to combat the spread of diseases, the NMA-FCT is urging residents to maintain a clean environment and adopt healthy lifestyles.

However, Dr. Ayogu highlighted the stark reality that Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, is currently underfunding its healthcare sector. The country allocates less than 5% of its national budget to health, far below the 15% recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). He stressed that with such a large population, the government must do more to meet the health needs of its people.

This medical outreach in Sauka community is part of the association's Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. It is targeted at underserved communities and aims to help the poor and vulnerable who struggle to access healthcare due to poverty, lack of information, or geographic barriers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on this outreach, reflecting the importance of such initiatives in addressing the healthcare challenges faced by many Nigerians. Dr. Ayogu reiterated that many diseases are preventable and residents should focus on reducing risk factors through proper hygiene and healthy living.

In his advice during the outreach, Dr. Ayogu emphasized that it is not just about treating diseases, but also about preventing them. He urged everyone to take responsibility for their health and the health of their communities. As the healthcare sector in Nigeria continues to face challenges, initiatives like this medical outreach in Sauka community serve as a beacon of hope for many.
