Robert Habeck Steps Down from Green Bundestag Faction, Continues as Vice Chancellor and Minister

Robert Habeck, a prominent figure in German politics, has announced his resignation from the Bundestag faction of Alliance 90/The Greens. This decision, however, does not affect his roles as Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economics, Minister of Climate Action, and Chancellor candidate.

Habeck's departure from the Green Bundestag faction is not related to any disagreements or controversies within the party. The faction has thanked him for his years of dedicated service and contributions, particularly in the areas of climate action and renewable energy.

Over the years, Habeck has been instrumental in Germany's ability to meet its climate goals. Under his leadership, the expansion of renewables has been a significant success story. He has also advocated for an investment offensive and reform of the debt brake for economic development, unity, and climate neutrality within the Union.

Katharina Dröge and Britta Haßelmann, co-chairs of the Bundestag faction of Alliance 90/The Greens, have acknowledged the significant impact of Habeck's work within the party in various roles. They have worked effectively with him for years, collaborating on legislative initiatives and difficult compromises.

The Green Bundestag faction has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the policies and initiatives that Habeck has championed, including meeting climate goals, securing energy supply, and expanding renewables. The faction is currently in the process of electing a new Co-Chair to replace Habeck.

Habeck's resignation comes after years of effective collaboration between him and Dröge and Haßelmann on legislative initiatives and difficult compromises. He is known for his conviction that political competitors should be seen as people to build bridges with.

Habeck values politics being approachable, authentic, and empathetic. He has significantly shaped Alliance 90/The Greens in recent years in various roles, including party chair, Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economics, Minister of Climate Action, and Chancellor candidate.

One of Habeck's most notable achievements was securing energy supply after Russia's unlawful attack on Ukraine. He has demonstrated a commitment to diplomacy and finding solutions that benefit the country as a whole.

As of September 1, 2025, Habeck has resigned from the Bundestag. He plans to spend the next year abroad to gain distance from the Berlin political scene and seek new areas of impact beyond politics. After serving as Vice Chancellor and Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate from 2021 to 2025, he stepped down following the Greens' poor election result in 2025 and no longer holds a parliamentary mandate.

The Green Bundestag faction has expressed confidence in Habeck's ability to continue his work as Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economics, Minister of Climate Action, and Chancellor candidate. They thanked him for his years of service and wished him the best in his future endeavors.
