Proposal remains undecided by the Commission as of now.
Digital Minister Dorothee Baer of the Christian Social Union (CSU) has spoken out against allegations that the postponement of the CDU party congress is an intentional move to prevent Friedrich Merz, a leadership candidate for the CDU, from becoming party leader.
In an interview with the "World" newspaper (Wednesday edition), Baer shared her views on the matter, stating that Merz's claim that the postponement has nothing to do with the pandemic is "more than a steep claim." She remained supportive of the decision to postpone the CDU party congress due to the pandemic, and suggested that instead of looking for blame, one should consider what is necessary given the current circumstances.
Baer further expressed her concerns about the potential impact of large events during the pandemic on public perception. She stated that events with 1,000 people in one place during the pandemic may not send a positive signal to citizens.
When asked about her position on Merz's allegation that the CDU "establishment" is trying to prevent him from becoming party leader by postponing the CDU party congress due to the Corona pandemic, Baer disputed the claim. She does not share Merz's view that the CDU "establishment" is hindering his bid to become party leader.
Baer also made it clear that she believes a good candidate will still be a good candidate in the spring. She suggested that instead of focusing on blame, the party should be considering what is necessary to move forward in these challenging times.
Despite the ongoing controversy, Baer remains optimistic about the future of the CDU. She stated that a good candidate will rise to the occasion and lead the party through these difficult times.
The interview with Baer was published in the "World" newspaper, providing insight into her views on the CDU party congress postponement and the ongoing leadership race within the party.
