The Netherlands secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Lithuania in a Group G World Cup qualifier on Sunday, thanks to a brace from Memphis Depay and a goal from Quinten Timber.
Despite the impressive win, the Dutch performance was met with disappointment from former HSV legend Rafael van der Vaart, who expressed his disapproval with the team's performance. Van der Vaart, a known fan of Jordy Schouten, found it problematic that Schouten was allowed to continue playing after an action during the match. He considered it a "miracle" that Schouten was not penalized.
The Netherlands, however, remained at the top of Group G with 10 points, thanks to the 3 points earned from the win against Lithuania. The team's next games are against Malta and Finland in October.
The match started off evenly, with both teams showing determination. However, it was Lithuania who struck first, with Gvidas Gineitis scoring the equalizer in the 36th minute. The Netherlands responded quickly, with Depay scoring his 51st international goal just five minutes later.
Edvinas Girdvainis equalized for Lithuania once more just before halftime (43rd minute), prompting criticism from van der Vaart for the lack of intervention from the Dutch team after the second goal.
The second half saw a more aggressive approach from the Dutch, with Depay scoring the winning goal in the 63rd minute, making it 3-2. Quinten Timber added the final nail in the coffin with his first goal for the national team in the 71st minute.
Despite the controversy and the disappointment with the team's performance, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman was pleased with the 3 points. Depay, who played a pivotal role in the match, will continue his run in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with his next matches for the Netherlands national team scheduled against Malta and Finland in October.
