Proposal to Pause Huddersfield Modernization Initiatives Advocated by Unison
Kirklees Council, based in Huddersfield, is grappling with a significant financial crisis, requiring savings of £47.5m. The local authority has outlined its strategy to overcome these pressures, which includes growing the local economy, making efficiencies, and prioritising spending.
The strategy was presented at the first council meeting on 6 September, outlining the local authority's Medium Term Financial Strategy. The plan aims to set Kirklees Council on a firm financial footing and safeguard its future, built upon urgent actions taken to address immediate financial issues.
Council leader Cathy Scot is expected to be elected as the permanent replacement for Cllr Shabir Pandor at the 13 September meeting. Pandor's resignation occurred in July, and the permanent successor has not been publicly announced.
The financial challenges faced by Kirklees Council are not limited to the local level but are regional and national in scope. Cllr Graham Turner, the Cabinet member for finance and regeneration, has stated that many councils are facing significant financial pressures.
Unison, the largest trades union in Kirklees Council, has expressed concerns about job losses and spending cuts. Union members are being encouraged to protest against these measures at the 13 September meeting. Unison has stated that at least 250 jobs will be lost through compulsory redundancy. However, the strategy does not mention any new job loss figures beyond the 250 jobs threatened by compulsory redundancy.
The strategy does not mention any changes to the planned £250m regeneration project or its potential staging. Union members are urging Kirklees Council to halt plans for this project to save jobs.
Kirklees Council has been transparent about its financial situation and the impact of the cost-of-living and longstanding under-funding on its finances this year. The strategy includes growing the Kirklees economy by encouraging more new home construction and attracting further investment through infrastructure.
The financial plan also includes a focus on transparency and keeping residents informed about the council's financial situation. The full council meeting scheduled for 13 September will continue to discuss plans for saving money and the Medium Term Financial Strategy, as well as the potential election of Cathy Scot as the permanent replacement for Cllr Shabir Pandor.
