Protesters supporting Palestine were criticized by Tom Pidcock for endangering the Vuelta a España stage due to their actions.
Tom Pidcock's Premature Race Ending at Vuelta a Espana
Tom Pidcock, a member of Israel-Premier Tech, had a promising day at the Vuelta a Espana that ended prematurely, denying him the chance for his first Grand Tour stage win since 2022.
Pidcock, riding for Q36.5, was leading the pack with Jonas Vingegaard, the race leader of VISMA-Lease a Bike, until they were slowed down and forced to stop racing with just 3km to go. At this point, they had a 10-second lead over João Almeida.
The day of the race was expected to have the most protesters, and Pidcock had been informed about this beforehand. As he rode towards the finish line, he was met by pro-Palestine demonstrators lining the Gran Vía de Don Diego López de Haro, waving Palestine flags.
Pidcock, who had shown his best legs of the race and dropped everyone, was initially distracted by the protests. However, he was soon joined by Vingegaard, and together they continued towards the finish line.
Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Pidcock expressed his disappointment but did not dwell on it. He stated, "I felt like today was my day." He also added that he went to the finish line alone as "just doing a Tom Pidcock thing."
The leadership of Pidcock's team expressed frustration with the pro-Palestine protests during Stage 11 of the Vuelta a España in Bilbao, wishing the protesters would demonstrate in a way that did not disrupt the race. They were also initially unsure of Pidcock's whereabouts after the race.
Pidcock initially did not want to discuss politics, but was asked questions about the protestors. He admitted that he was unsure of where the 3km mark was during the race. However, he was aware that the neutralization was going to come at the 3km to go mark.
Pidcock expressed his concerns about the protests at the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a Espana. He believes that safety should be prioritized in the peloton and that protests putting riders in danger are not beneficial to the cause they are protesting.
Despite the disappointing end to his race, Pidcock remains hopeful that the worst of the protest disruption is past. He stated that he believes safety should be prioritized and that the peloton should be able to complete the race without interference.
