Protesting in Support of Palestine at Venice Film Festival's Perimeters

Thousands of people participated in a pro-Palestinian demonstration during the Venice Film Festival, calling for an end to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. The demonstration, which was estimated to have around 3,000 participants, was part of the initiative "Venice 4 Palestine."

At the heart of the demonstration was a sign reading "Stop the Genocide." The call to action comes as South Africa has filed a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court regarding the alleged genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. The legal request was filed by Israeli human rights organizations B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, who accused the Israeli government of committing genocide in Gaza.

Critics accuse Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in its fight against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The high number of civilian casualties in the Gaza war is internationally criticized, with the UN Convention defining genocide as the intent to destroy a particular group.

The film "The Voice of Hind Rajab," directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, is in competition at the Venice Film Festival and sheds light on the ongoing conflict. The film is about a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed in the Gaza Strip. "The Voice of Hind Rajab" is set to premiere on September 3.

Last year's Golden Lion winner, Giorgos Lanthimos, wore a pin with the colors of the Palestinian flag during his appearances at the Venice Film Festival, showing his solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Israel and the German government have rejected the genocide accusation against them. Israel claims self-defense following the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023.

The Middle East conflict has been a topic on the sidelines of the Venice Film Festival, with several groups calling for the pro-Palestinian demonstration. The Gaza war is a part of the ongoing Middle East conflict, a topic that continues to be a source of controversy and debate.
