Protests against asylum policies escalate at Canary Wharf, with a child potentially exposed to pepper spray and an officer sustaining a blow to the face.
In the town of Epping on Sunday evening, a protest over the accommodation of asylum seekers at the Bell Hotel turned into a series of confrontations and arrests. Approximately 200 people gathered outside the Epping Forest District Council building, with a similar number of counter-protesters holding banners advocating against racism and far-right movements.
The events took a turn for the worse when a dispersal order was put in place, and a group of masked protesters became aggressive towards the police. Essex Police set an 8pm end time for the protests, but the clashes continued well beyond that.
During the protests, Essex Police made three arrests, including two men and one woman, for public order offences, common assault, and possession of drugs. The Metropolitan Police also made an arrest, on suspicion of assaulting a member of the public. The suspect was later apprehended and used PAVA spray. It's been reported that a child may have been temporarily affected by the spray during the incident.
One of the most notable moments occurred when a woman climbed the steps and unfurled a Union flag at the Epping Forest District Council building. However, contrary to some suggestions, her arrest was not for flying the flag, but on suspicion of breaching a Section 14 order.
The Metropolitan Police also witnessed an assault by a protester on a member of the public, and a group of masked protesters were present during the protests. In response, Commander Adam Slonecki stated that the police will not tolerate such behavior at future protests, and issued an order to prevent people from concealing their identity with masks.
As the protests continued, demonstrators left the Britannia Hotel location in Canary Wharf, kept apart by police. Protesters had gathered outside the hotel, divided over the UK's immigration policies. Meanwhile, protests inside Canary Wharf shopping centre became aggressive towards police, adding to the tension of the day.
The protest action in Epping on Sunday evening involved local people as well as some members of organized far-right groups, who have been protesting against the accommodation of asylum seekers at the Bell Hotel. The hotel has seen repeated demonstrations over this issue.
Despite the confrontations, both protesters and counter-protesters demonstrated their right to free speech and assembly, albeit in a manner that caused disruption and led to several arrests. As the situation unfolded, the police worked diligently to maintain order and ensure the safety of all involved.
