Protests disrupt the beginning of the US Open men's final, with President Trump receiving a hostile reception, resulting in a delay of 30 minutes.
President Trump Attends US Open Men's Final Amidst Mixed Reception
President Donald Trump made a sports-focused appearance at the US Open on Sunday, attending the men's final as a guest of Rolex. The event, which saw Spain's Carlos Alcaraz face Italy's Jannik Sinner, was marked by a mix of cheers and boos, with the stadium mostly empty at the time.
Trump, dressed in a suit and a long red tie, briefly emerged from his suite about 45 minutes before the match, drawing louder boos after briefly smirking at the crowd while standing in salute. Despite the mixed reception, the President mostly refrained from applauding during the match.
The US Tennis Association (USTA) had instructed broadcasters not to air crowd reactions to Trump's presence, requesting that attention remain focused on the players rather than on political reactions in the crowd. Similarly, the USTA did not air crowd reactions during the national anthem, a tradition usually broadcast at such events.
Thousands of fans experienced long lines to pass through Secret Service checkpoints due to the visit of President Trump, causing a delay of 30 minutes to the match's start. The Secret Service stated that protecting Trump "required a comprehensive effort," which may have contributed to the delays.
Despite the 39% tariff on Swiss goods, the White House did not comment on Trump's attendance at the US Open, which was sponsored by Rolex. Senior White House officials, including Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, accompanied Trump at the event.
Notable celebrities in attendance at the US Open included Pink, Bruce Springsteen, and Shonda Rhimes. Fans largely avoided wearing Trump's signature "Make America Great Again" hats at the event.
In a notable absence, no major street protests occurred during Trump's visit to the US Open. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump's domestic travel has primarily focused on major sporting events. Other events attended by Trump since January include the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, UFC fights, NCAA wrestling championships, and the FIFA Club World Cup final.
