PSOE and Sumar are set to discuss countermeasures against Israel in the Council of Ministers meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

In a bold move, the Spanish political party Sumar has proposed a series of measures aimed at suspending diplomatic and commercial relations with Israel, in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The proposal, presented last Thursday to the PSOE, includes the approval of an arms embargo law, which would see the suspension of all trade in military goods with Israel. Sumar also advocates for preventing the use of Spanish airports and ports as transit points for armament.

Yolanda Díaz, a key figure in Sumar, has been vocal in her condemnation of the Israeli government, describing it as "genocidal" and calling for a break in relations. She has proposed five "concrete and immediate sanctions" against Israel, including the withdrawal of the Spanish ambassador in Tel Aviv and the declaration of certain individuals persona non grata, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several ministers.

The measures also include the obligation to inspect and monitor maritime ports and airports for cargoes destined for or coming from a state affected by the embargo. Sumar has proposed that the arms embargo law be approved directly in the Council of Ministers as a royal decree-law.

Sources from Moncloa to TVE are being "cautious" and studying the possibilities regarding these proposed measures. The governing partners of PSOE and Sumar are negotiating a series of measures against Israel, with the aim of approving them at the next Council of Ministers meeting on Tuesday, 9th.

In addition to the proposed sanctions, Sumar has also suggested signing the declaration of the Hague Group in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Yolanda Díaz has asked, "Why do we do it with Russia and not with Israel?" - a question that underscores the party's firm stance on the issue.

The new proposal from Sumar aims to stop the "genocide" in Gaza, and Yolanda Díaz has called for a clear, non-interpretable obligation for the embargo of military material in cases of genocide or serious human rights violations. The party's efforts to advance a package of measures against Israel are a significant development in the ongoing international response to the conflict.
