Qualification projections, betting probabilities, and recommendations for the World Cup: Sweden poised for a swift commencement

Sweden and Iceland are gearing up for their respective opening matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifying group stages. Both nations, with their unique strengths and recent form, promise an exciting start to the tournament.

Sweden, under the guidance of manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, boasts a strong squad. Victor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak, and Anthony Elanga, each valued at £64 million, £125 million, and £55 million respectively, form a formidable attacking trio. The team has been in impressive form, winning eight out of their last ten matches.

However, the Swedish squad will be without Dejan Kulusevski due to injury. Despite this setback, the team remains a potential dark horse for the 2026 World Cup, with odds currently standing at 125-1.

Sweden's sectional rivals in the qualifying group include Slovenia, Switzerland, and Kosovo. Slovenia, who have struggled since their round of 16 exit at Euro 2024, have managed to amass six of their eight points in Nations League Group B3 with wins over Kazakhstan. Despite posting victories in summer friendlies against Luxembourg (1-0) and Bosnia (2-1), Slovenia were not fully convincing.

Iceland, on the other hand, registered a shock 3-1 friendly victory away to Scotland in the summer. The team has shown resilience at home, taking seven points from their last three games in Euro 2024 qualifying. Iceland can make a winning start by defeating Azerbaijan in Reykjavik, a team that has gone ten matches without winning.

Iceland's group in the qualifying tournament is Group D, alongside France and Ukraine. Sweden's group includes Slovenia, Switzerland, and Kosovo. Both nations will be eager to secure a place in the World Cup and make their mark on the global stage.
