Quickly exiting on the emergency lane of A61 highway
A serious accident on the A61 near Mutterstadt caused significant disruption on Sunday morning, with the road being closed for over an hour.
The incident occurred shortly after the Mutterstadt interchange, where a 65-year-old driver raced through the emergency lane for 150 meters at high speed. The cause of this erratic behaviour remains a mystery, as no definitive explanation or motive has been provided.
The 65-year-old's van crashed into a Porsche in the left lane, causing a chain reaction that involved a total of three vehicles. The impact of the collision pushed the Porsche onto a Mini in front of it. Fortunately, the driver of the Mini only sustained light injuries.
However, the incident resulted in severe injuries for the 65-year-old driver and his passenger, as well as the two occupants of the Porsche. Due to the extent of his injuries, the 65-year-old was too severely injured to be questioned.
The accident led to a complete closure of the A61 towards Koblenz. Emergency services, police, and the fire department were all present at the scene. The total damage from the accident is estimated to be 65,000 euros.
It took more than two and a half hours to completely reopen the A61, causing significant traffic delays. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are still ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
