The 90th edition of the Vuelta Ciclista a España is off to an exciting start, with the race making an unprecedented start in the Piedmont region of Italy.
In the first stage, which took place between Novara and Alba, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) dominated the intermediate sprint, securing a valuable advantage for the general classification. Philipsen crossed the finish line first, and with this win, he became the leader of the Vuelta 2025.
Ethan Vernon (Israel-Premier Tech) and Orluis Aular (Movistar) finished closely behind, coming in second and third respectively in the sprint. Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal-Quick Step) also put up a strong performance, winning the intermediate sprint.
The second stage of the race will start between Alba and Limone Piemonte on August 24, covering a distance of 156 kilometers. The stage is expected to be flat for much of the route, but the final 10 kilometers will feature a challenging climb at 5% gradient.
Limone Piemonte, the stage's finish location, is a picturesque town known for its old town traced on the historic Via della Sal and its mountain atmosphere. The town is also famous for its cultural heritage, with traditional events such as the Abaiya carnival.
