Vuelta a España 2025: Almeida Challenges Vingegaard in Home Country

The Vuelta a España 2025 resumes activity after a rest day, with the competition heating up as Portuguese cyclist Joao Almeida continues his fight for the lead near his home country. The duel between Almeida and race leader Jonas Vingegaard is the main event in the final week of the Vuelta.

On September 9, Stage 16 of the Vuelta Ciclista a España 2025 will be broadcast live on Teledeporte, La 1, and the website Play starting at 14:45 hours. Carlos de Andrés and Perico Delgado will provide commentary for the broadcast.

The stage, starting in Poio, a new port city for the race, is a 172 km route with 3,472 meters of accumulated elevation gain. The terrain becomes more rugged after the Alto de Groba until the finish in Mos, which debuted in the 2021 edition.

The stage features constant ups and downs with four climbs of different categories. The first climbable climb comes at km 73 with the ascent to the Alto de San Antonino, a third-category climb. Shortly after, cyclists will climb the Alto de Groba, a first-category climb. Two more second-category climbs await at the Alto de Prado and the finish in Mos.

Stage 16 has a 'leg-breaker' profile, designed to make it difficult to bring down the day's breakaway, if there is one, according to La Vuelta's technical director, Fernando Escartín. The stage's challenging route could allow ambushes and potentially turn the race upside down.

British cyclist Tom Pidcock provisionally occupies the third spot on the podium, 2'38" behind Vingegaard. Joao Almeida is expected to have support from the roadside during Stage 16.

Complete stages and best summaries can be found on the Play website, while all the latest news from the Vuelta can be found on the special web and social media platforms (X, Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok). The live broadcast of Stage 16 is provided by Eurosport and RTVE, starting at 14:00 local time.

As the race progresses, fans will be on the edge of their seats, eager to see if Almeida can close the gap on Vingegaard and take the lead in the Vuelta a España 2025.
