Women's America's Cup Kicks Off in Barcelona

The Women's America's Cup, a significant step forward for women's sailing, commenced on October 5-6, 2024, in the vibrant city of Barcelona. The event, part of the build-up to the 37th America's Cup, features two groups, A and B, competing against each other.

On the opening day, Group A teams took to the waters, with four races held. Luna Rossa leads Group A after Day 1, having accrued four points more than Athena Pathway, who is in second place. Emirates Team New Zealand follows closely in third.

Meanwhile, Hannah Mills, the skipper of Athena Pathway, expressed her excitement about the racing, calling it a huge step for women's sailing.

In Group B, JAJO Team, helmed by Odile van Aanholt and Willemijn Offerman, currently leads with 27 points. Sail Team BCN is in second place with 24 points, followed closely by Team Andoo Australia with 23 points.

The first race of the day in Group B was a close one, with Team Andoo Australia leading until just before the finish, when they fell off the foils, allowing Swedish Challenge to claim the victory. Andoo Australia responded in the second race, sailing superbly to claim a victory.

The stage was set for more thrilling action on the waters of Barcelona as DutchSail's JAJO Team took control of the day's final two races, executing flawless starts and picking the best of the shift to secure back-to-back wins.

Unfortunately, very light winds in Barcelona have forced the cancellation of racing on Monday and a double session planned for Groups A and B on Tuesday 8 October. The Women's America's Cup continues on Tuesday, with Swedish Challenge, who won the opening race, sitting just behind on 21 points.

Athena Pathway won the first race in Group A, while Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli won the second and fourth races. Emirates Team New Zealand claimed victory in the third race.

The Women's America's Cup is a testament to the growing strength and passion of women in sailing, and the racing so far has been a clear reflection of this. As the competition continues, the stage is set for more challenging and exciting action on the waters of Barcelona.
