Racing Preparation in Dusseldorf: Switching from Polished to Clumped Footwear for the Tonnes Race – A Royal Training Session

In the charming town of Niederkassel, the annual barrel race, hosted by the Tonnengarde, took place on Shrove Sunday, 2nd March, following the Veedelszoch. This traditional event attracted a variety of participants, including the Prince and Princess, Prince Andreas I. and Venetia Evelyn.

The excitement began a week earlier with a practice session held on the market square on Friday, 21st February. The Barrel Racing team "Niederkasseler Pferdefreunde" used this opportunity to prepare for the competition, and they were also involved in the actual performance on the day of the race.

The barrel-making couple, Uwe and Anika, were no strangers to the event, having been accustomed to the wooden clogs used in the race. Their familiarity with the clogs and Anika's practical attire gave them an advantage during the practice session.

The race was filled with unexpected turns. During the competition, Anika's barrel fell off her cart, but Venetia Evelyn managed to trot to the finish line, demonstrating her resilience and skill.

The barrel-making couple, Uwe and Anika, also participated in the race, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. It was a close race, and it remains unclear whether Prince Andreas I.'s victory was due to his technique or Uwe's leniency.

However, there was no doubt about the Prince's determination. He approached the barrel race with great determination and secured a victory, adding another triumph to his list.

The barrel race, a cherished tradition in Niederkassel, was held live in the town on Shrove Sunday, 2nd March. The event showcased the spirit of camaraderie and the competitive spirit of the participants, making it a day to remember for all who attended.
