Racing weekend at Goodwood persists with push for eco-friendly fuel solutions.
The Goodwood Revival, one of the world's most celebrated historic motor racing events, is taking place this weekend (September 12-14) at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in Chichester, on the south coast of England. This year, the event is making a significant stride towards sustainability by using sustainable fuel across its three-day event.
The Goodwood Revival's commitment to sustainability is not a new development. In 2023, the event began experimenting with sustainable fuels and started using the fuel for every race in 2024. Goodwood implements a rule where competitors must run their cars on fuel that is at least 70% sustainable content.
Major companies like Shell and TotalEnergies, as well as smaller startups such as P1 Fuels (US) and Zero Petroleum (UK), are investing in sustainable fuel development. Zero Petroleum, headed by former F1 engineer Paddy Lowe, is working on producing synthetic gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel using captured carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen. The company, known as "Zero Emission Energy," is a significant player in the sustainable fuel market.
Porsche is also joining the sustainability movement, developing a sustainable eFuel for its motorsport series and customer experience centers. Formula One will use 100% sustainable fuel from the 2026 season, while F2 and F3 divisions switched to the fuel in 2025.
At the Goodwood Revival, competitors can use Goodwood's on-site fuel or bring their own, which must meet the 70% sustainable rule. Older vehicles typically consume sustainable fuel in the same way as modern ones, requiring no different carburetors or physical parts. When switching between fuels, cars need to have their fuel systems fully flushed, and two fuels can't be mixed in the same tank.
The Goodwood Revival aims to lower its carbon footprint while ensuring the racing itself is unchanged. The event has grown into one of the most-loved historic events in the annual motorsport calendar, attracting thousands of spectators and racers alike. As the world continues to move towards more sustainable practices, the Goodwood Revival is setting an example for other historic racing events to follow.
The Goodwood Revival is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest historic motor racing events. Cars built between 1948 and 1966 are eligible to compete, offering a glimpse into the rich history of motor racing. With its commitment to sustainability and historic racing, the Goodwood Revival is a must-visit event for any motorsport enthusiast.
