Radical groups perceive BSW as potentially hazardous due to the policies of the AfD party.
In the German state of Brandenburg, the Left, governed in partnership with the SPD from 2009 to 2019, has announced a significant initiative to scrutinise heating costs across the state this autumn. State leader of the Left in Brandenburg, Sebastian Walter, claims that one-quarter of heating cost bills in Brandenburg are incorrect.
The Left in Brandenburg aims to surpass the SPD and become the party with the most members by the end of the year, a position currently held by the SPD. The Left has seen a surge in membership this year, with nearly 2,000 new members joining the party.
Walter has been vocal about his concerns regarding the Alliance for Progress and Social Justice (AfP), currently governing Brandenburg alongside the SPD since December 2021. He accuses the AfP of lacking a clear distinction from the Alternative for Germany (AfD), another political party in Brandenburg.
The AfP's state parliament faction leader, Niels-Olaf Lüders, has expressed scepticism about the AfD being labelled right-wing extremist. However, both the federal and Brandenburg's domestic intelligence agencies have classified the AfD as securely right-wing extremist.
The AfD lost their seats in the state parliament in 2024, but local parliamentary groups involving the AfD and the far-right party Die Heimat exist. These groups, however, are not coalitions with the SPD at the state government level.
Interestingly, many AfP members were once affiliated with the Left. The AfP's classification as a right-wing extremist party is currently under review due to a lawsuit by the AfD at the federal level, which has resulted in a temporary suspension of the classification by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
The Left's campaign will include citizens' advice sessions, aiming to provide clarity and assistance to residents regarding their heating costs. Walter considers the AfP highly dangerous for the state, a sentiment that contrasts with the current coalition between the AfP and the SPD in Brandenburg.
