In the heart of Cologne, a significant incident unfolded on the morning of the 31st of January. A collision between a tram and a bus took place at the intersection of the tram tracks and the road, causing a series of events that required extensive recovery operations.
The tram, operating on line 701 and heading towards Rath/Unterrath, derailed as a result of the impact. Simultaneously, the bus, coming from Rath, was intending to turn around at the same location using its own bus lane. According to consistent reports, the tram had the right of way, and the parallel traffic had a green light.
Both vehicles were significantly damaged in the collision, and recovery operations were promptly initiated. Rheinbahn, the operator of the Rheinbahn buses involved in the accident, deployed its own heavy equipment to clear the tram and bus. The recovery operations lasted until mid-morning, causing minimal major traffic disruptions despite the scale of the incident.
Sadly, the drivers of both vehicles, aged 31 and 42 respectively, were taken to hospitals for treatment. Four passengers on the tram also sustained slight injuries. Fortunately, the bus had no passengers on board at the time of the collision.
