Railroad Romance television series has been terminated.

In a surprising turn of events, the German broadcaster SWR has announced the end of production for the beloved show "Railway Romance" at the end of this year. However, fans of the series can breathe a sigh of relief as new episodes are currently in production, set to air in 2026.

Originally starting as a filler in the SWR program back in 1991, "Railway Romance" quickly gained a large following in the 90s. The show, which features films and reports about steam locomotives and historical railways in Germany and around the world, has produced over 1,000 episodes.

Hagen von Ortloff, who presented the show for many years, is considered the inventor of "Railway Romance". He is credited with the show's success, which was unexpected, as the films about trains and railway lines became a hit series. At the start of each episode, images of the old narrow-gauge locomotive of the museum railway Ochsenhausen-Warthausen in Upper Swabia were usually shown, accompanied by the catchy theme music "Sentimental Journey" by Les Brown, which will likely continue to be used in the new episodes.

Despite the show's ending in 2021, new episodes for "Railway Romance" are currently being produced. Interestingly, these new episodes are being produced by the BBC, marking a collaboration between German and British production teams. Hagen von Ortloff has appealed to the SWR to keep the editorial team of "Railway Romance" intact, ensuring the continuity and quality of the series.

The SWR spokesperson stated that the editorial team will be dissolved at the end of the year, and no new episodes will be produced in the future. However, episodes of "Railway Romance" have been provided on YouTube and in the ARD media library for several years, allowing fans to revisit their favourite episodes.

In 2016, Hagen von Ortloff stated that the short films had a higher viewing rate than the shows that were shown before and after them. Some of the popular episodes include "The leisurely train from Abreschviller", "In the economy class through Cambodia" or "The Sauschwänzlebahn - Strategy on Rails".

As we bid farewell to the traditional production of "Railway Romance", we look forward to the new episodes set to air in 2026, promising to continue the romantic journey through the world of trains and railways.
