Ranking of the Highest-Paid Book Writers
In a groundbreaking report published by Forbes, the earnings of the world's top authors in the e-book industry were revealed. The timeframe covered by the report was between June 1, 2009, and June 2, 2010.
James Patterson, a prolific thriller author, topped the list with earnings exceeding $70 million. Patterson's success is attributed to a new 17-book deal, which is expected to boost his earnings significantly.
In second place, Stephenie Meyer, the paranormal vampire author, made approximately $40 million. The Harry Potter series of books, often seen as a generation-defining series, placed J.K Rowling as the world's only billion-dollar author, but she only managed to rank tenth this year, earning $10 million. This was a slow year for Rowling, as no new book was issued.
Stephen King, a horror and suspense author, ranked third with earnings of $34 million. John Grisham, a legal thriller author, earned $15 million and ranked eighth, with a significant portion of his earnings coming from the e-book versions of his books with Random House this year.
Janet Evanovich, a mystery and romance author, made $16 million and ranked seventh, while Danielle Steele, another romance author, earned $32 million and ranked fourth. Dean Koontz, a horror author, made $18 million and ranked sixth, and Ken Follett, a British author known for "The Pillars of Earth", made $20 million and ranked eighth.
Nicholas Sparks, a romance writer, earned $14 million and ranked ninth, with his most recent book, The Last Song, doing well in sales, and his upcoming book Safe Haven projected to be a best seller. Jeffery Deaver made the highest earnings in 2010 from his 51st to 55th bestseller novel "The Postcard Killers" and topped Forbes' list of highest-earning authors in the e-book sector.
In addition to book sales, the report also included film rights, gaming deals, and other income. Amazon also published a report of the authors who have sold the most ebooks online.
John Grisham's recent success is attributed to the new legal thriller, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer, aimed at the teen market. This shows that even established authors can find success in new markets and genres.
The report provides an insight into the lucrative world of e-books and the earnings of some of the most successful authors in the industry. It's clear that the e-book sector is a significant source of income for these authors, and it will be interesting to see how their earnings evolve in the future.
