Rapid Expansion of Bicycle Sales in Decathlon's Romanian Market Remains Among the Swiftest in EU
In a recent report by Ziarul Financiar, Decathlon, a leading European sports goods retailer, has revealed significant growth in bicycle sales in Romania over the last three years.
Romania stands among the top three markets in Europe with the fastest growth in bicycle sales. This growth is attributed to the increasing popularity of cycling as a mode of transport and recreation, and Decathlon's strategic presence in the country.
One of the key locations for Decathlon's bicycle production is Timișoara, home to one of the largest factories in Eastern Europe. Approximately 4,000 bicycles are assembled daily in Timișoara, catering to the entire European Decathlon network.
The average value for a first-time purchase of an adult bicycle in Romania ranges from RON 1,200 to 1,500 (approximately €237 to €300). For children's bicycles, the average investment ranges from RON 1,000 (approximately €200) to RON 1,200 (approximately €237). Premium aluminum children's bicycles can cost up to RON 2,000 (approximately €400).
Bucharest-Ilfov is the region generating the largest share of sales for Decathlon in Romania. However, the market is well-balanced between children's and adult bicycles in terms of turnover.
The children's bicycle segment is the most significant in terms of the number of units sold. However, the segment of road, gravel, or XC carbon frame models, with prices above RON 5,000 (approximately €1,000), is gaining popularity.
Two years ago, electric bicycle sales in Romania doubled, and the segment has registered an increase of over 40% compared to the previous year. This surge in electric bicycle sales indicates a shift in consumer preferences towards more sustainable and efficient modes of transport.
MTBs (Mountain Bikes) still dominate the preferences of Romanians, but more and more customers are turning to road, gravel, and especially electric bicycles. This trend suggests a growing interest in various cycling experiences and the demand for versatile bicycles.
Decathlon's commitment to Romania is further demonstrated by the German bicycle manufacturer Corratec, which will produce woom bikes for the European market at its Timișoara facility starting from the first quarter of 2026.
With 31 stores in Romania, in addition to the online platform and the app, Decathlon offers a wide range of bicycles to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of Romanian cyclists. The company's significant sales in Romania underscore the growing popularity of cycling in the country and Decathlon's role in facilitating this trend.
