Rays' adversary Parker Messick lands another win against them (again) by Guardians

In a thrilling matchup between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians, it was the latter who emerged victorious in a low-scoring affair on Sunday morning, September 4, 2025.

Carson Williams, representing the Rays, put on a show with three home runs, but it wasn't enough to surpass the Guardians' resilience. Williams' first home run came in the fifth inning, followed by another in the same inning, and the third in the ninth. His impressive performance, however, was not enough to secure a Rays win.

On the mound for the Rays, Drew Rasmussen delivered a strong outing, firing five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Despite striking out two batters, he walked three and hit one, but his performance kept the game tightly contested.

For the Guardians, Parker Messick was the star of the show. In his fourth career start, Messick posted his second career win against Tampa Bay, allowing one run over six innings. He showed his prowess by striking out four batters and not issuing a walk. Notably, he induced a double-play grounder in the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless.

The Guardians' offence came alive in the sixth inning. Jose Ramirez tripled, driving in a run, and Jhonkensy Noel scored the go-ahead run as a pinch runner. Angel Martinez, who came off the bench, was 2-for-3 with a run, while Brandon Lowe was 2-for-4 with a double for the Rays.

In the ninth inning, Cade Smith closed out the game for the Guardians, striking out the side for his 11th save and his second save in two games. Garrett Cleavinger (1-5) took the loss for the Rays, allowing two runs in the sixth inning.

This victory marks the second time in less than two weeks that Messick has bested the Rays, adding another feather to his cap in what has been a promising start to his career. The Rays, on the other hand, will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game.
