RDNA 5 from AMD could potentially challenge Nvidia, leading to effects more substantial than anticipated

AMD is making waves in the GPU market with its upcoming RDNA 5 lineup, reportedly codenamed UDNA. The tech giant is reportedly working on this powerful new series to potentially rival Nvidia's current-gen flagships.

The RDNA 5 lineup is expected to include a range of GPUs, from the ultra high-end AT0 to the entry-level AT4. Among these, the AT0 could feature up to 96 Compute Units (CUs), making it a formidable contender in the market.

The suspected name of AMD's high-end GPU for RDNA 5 is the "Radeon RX 10900 XT." If it indeed has 96 CUs, this would represent a significant upgrade over the current flagship, the RX 9070 XT, which maxes out at 64 CUs.

The memory interface of the RX 10090 XT, if it indeed features a 512-bit bus and GDDR7 memory, could make the card incredibly fast, potentially matching Nvidia's RTX 5090. This would be a welcome development, given that GPU prices have been high all year, and potential competition from AMD could affect Nvidia's pricing strategies.

AMD is also focusing on improving ray tracing in RDNA 5, a feature that was a strength for Nvidia in RDNA 3 but saw improvements in RDNA 4. This focus is likely to continue in RDNA 5, as AMD targets the more affordable segment of the GPU market.

Interestingly, each Compute Unit in the RDNA 5 architecture is separated into eight shader arrays. This could lead to some intriguing performance improvements, but the exact details are yet to be seen.

Meanwhile, Nvidia is also rumoured to launch the RTX 50-series Super refresh either this year or next, setting up an exciting time for the GPU market. The RTX 5080 is a current-gen flagship GPU from Nvidia, and the RTX 5070 Ti is a rival to the RX 9070 XT.

It's worth noting that the leaked information about RDNA 5 comes from a reputable source, Kepler_L2. However, AMD is yet to officially confirm any details about the RDNA 5 lineup.

RDNA 5, or UDNA, is not expected to make its debut before 2026. Until then, the RX 9070 XT remains AMD's flagship GPU, despite not being able to outperform Nvidia's current-gen flagships. However, it has been a favourite of the year, suggesting that AMD is making strides in the GPU market.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to follow this exciting development in the world of GPUs.
