Recalling the Life of Tom Hidley (1931-2025)

In the world of sound recording and reproduction, few names stand out as significantly as Tom Hidley. Born in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1931, Hidley's passion for sound technology was evident from an early age.

Hidley's career began in 1962 when he assisted in four rooms on Broadway, serving as an engineering tech and head mixer for MGM/Verve house producers. This was followed by his appointment as audio technical manager of A&R Recording in Manhattan in 1964, under the guidance of Phil Ramone.

Hidley's quest to extend the low-end of studio monitors began with Ramone. In 1967, he developed the world's first 16-track, 2-inch tape machine. This groundbreaking achievement marked the start of a series of innovative developments in the field of sound technology.

In 1969, Tom Hidley formed Westlake Audio to sell packaged electronics. During his tenure at Westlake, he worked with Pioneer design engineer Shozo Kinoshita to develop new vertical monitors. These monitors were surrounded by four inches of concrete, a testament to Hidley's commitment to quality and precision.

One of Hidley's most significant contributions to the industry came in the mid-1980s when he developed the concept of "the non-environment room." This revolutionary idea aimed to eliminate the colouration of sound caused by the room itself. Hidley continued to refine this concept for more than 30 years.

In 1971, Westlake Audio set up shop on Wilshire Boulevard, and Hidley built a series of large, custom two-way monitors with dual woofers that extended down to 40 Hz at TTG Studios, a venture he co-founded with Amnon "Ami" Hadani in 1965.

After the sale of Eastlake Audio in 1980, the development of the "non-environment-Studio" concept was continued by individuals or groups not explicitly named in the search results. However, Hidley's influence on the industry was undeniable.

Hidley sold back his share in Westlake Audio and moved to Switzerland to form Eastlake Audio in 1974. He continued to work in the industry, leading Hidley Design's construction teams across three decades. Notably, Michael Cronin led these teams during this period.

Tom Hidley passed away on May 2, 2025, nearing his 94th birthday, in Thailand. His contributions to the field of sound technology will continue to echo in the industry for years to come. Hidley's legacy serves as a testament to the power of passion and innovation in shaping the world of sound.
