The German Film Festival, an annual event held in Ludwigshafen, Rhineland-Palatinate, recently paid tribute to one of the most significant German filmmakers of the post-war era, Edgar Reitz. The organiser of the event, Filmverband Rheinland-Pfalz e.V., hosted a gala presentation of Reitz's new film, "Leibniz - Chronicle of a Lost Image."

Born in Morbach (Hunsrück), Reitz turned 92 this year, and the festival honoured him for his lifetime achievement in filmmaking, spanning over 50 years. Known for his multi-generational family saga, the "Heimat" cycle, which spans an entire century of German history, Reitz's work has left a lasting impact on German cinema.

The festival, which takes place in Ludwigshafen, the second-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate, offers thousands of seats in tent cinemas and an open-air cinema. Last year, over 120,000 people attended the festival, making it the second most visited German film festival after the Berlinale, according to the organisers.

The event was marked by a laudation delivered by the festival director, Michael Koetz, who highlighted Reitz's contributions to German cinema. The screening of "Leibniz - Chronicle of a Lost Image" took place on an island in the Rhine at the border with Baden-Württemberg.

The German Film Festival in Ludwigshafen is not just a celebration of German cinema but also an ideas hub and an important industry meeting point. The festival continues until September 7, and among the highlights is a presentation of Reitz's "Leibniz - Chronicle of a Lost Image."

Reitz's new film promises to be as thought-provoking and impactful as his previous works. As the festival comes to a close, it leaves audiences eagerly anticipating the future of German cinema and the continued contributions of visionary filmmakers like Edgar Reitz.
