In the heart of Austria, the picturesque region of Burgenland is basking in the glory of its most successful tourism season yet. According to Governor Hans Peter Doskozil, the region's best half-year and the strongest June ever are clear indicators of Burgenland's promising future.
The first half of 2025 saw a staggering 1,497,981 overnight stays, marking a historical milestone for tourism in Burgenland. June 2025, in particular, broke records with an impressive 476,882 overnight stays, making it the highest monthly value in the region's history.
The surge in tourism is not confined to the Austrian borders. Overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 14.4% to 141,906, with neighbouring European countries playing a significant role. Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia have shown notable increases, with Hungary experiencing an 18.4% rise, Slovakia a 25.4% increase, and Slovenia a 19.6% growth.
Germany, too, has contributed to the tourism boom, with a 19.5% increase in overnight stays, amounting to 180,126. Switzerland and Liechtenstein have also seen an 18.5% rise, further boosting Burgenland's tourism industry.
Burgenland Tourism Managing Director Didi Tunkel attributes this success to the hard work put into developing the tourist offer, positioning Burgenland within Austria and abroad, and implementing strong measures over the past months.
The Czech Republic has also joined the list of countries experiencing a rise in tourism, with a 14.8% increase in the market.
Looking ahead, Burgenland is gearing up for a series of exciting events, including the Martiniloben, the Blaufraenkischland Marathon, the Pannonian Hiking, and the Burgenland Winter Wonderland, which will feature the largest Christmas crib in the world in Moerbisch.
In the half-year comparison, there were 548,765 guest arrivals, representing a 3.3% increase, and overnight stays increased by 2.2%. Inland overnight stays grew to 1,162,237 (+1.6%), while foreign overnight stays reached 335,744 (+4.2%). In June 2025, 159,141 guests visited Burgenland, representing a 13.6% increase.
