The Federal Criminal Office (BKA) has recently published its annual report, shedding light on various trends and developments in Germany's criminal landscape.

One significant change that has been observed is a decrease in certain criminal offences. With cannabis no longer being completely banned in Germany, fewer offences related to this substance have been reported. This shift may be attributed to the official decriminalization of cannabis on April 1, 2024, when it was removed from the list of prohibited substances in the Narcotics Act.

However, the report also highlights a concerning increase in reports of sexual violence. In the past, fewer victims of such crimes reported these incidents to the police. Today, more victims feel empowered to come forward, which could be a positive sign of growing awareness and confidence in the justice system.

The report also touches upon the issue of violence among children and young people. Regrettably, there has been an increase in acts of violence committed by this demographic compared to previous years. Many of these children have serious problems that contribute to their violent behaviour.

Cannabis, a hemp plant, plays a role in this context as well. It can be smoked or processed into food, and hashish or marijuana can be made from the cannabis plant. While cannabis can be used in medicine, particularly for pain relief, it can also lead to addiction.

The Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, has expressed her concern over the high level of violence against women. She emphasised the importance of addressing this issue and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.

The BKA's annual report also underscores the importance of effective cooperation between federal states' police and international police cooperation. The BKA plays a crucial role in ensuring these collaborations are successful, contributing to a safer Germany for all.
