Reduced rail travel time between JB and KL by electric train services raises questions about its potential as an alternative to the High-Speed Rail (HSR).

The travel landscape between Johor Bahru, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur is set to change significantly with the completion of the new Electric Train Service (ETS) and Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. This groundbreaking development promises a more efficient travel option, avoiding traffic congestion and reducing travel time substantially.

The journey from Woodlands North RTS station in Singapore to Bukit Chagar RTS station in Johor Bahru will be seamless. Travellers will clear immigration at Woodlands North RTS station before embarking on a five-minute ride across the Johor Strait. Upon arrival at Bukit Chagar RTS station, travellers can access JB Sentral via a sheltered travellator, eliminating the need for a road journey.

At JB Sentral, travellers can board the ETS bound for KL Sentral. The new ETS is projected to reduce travel time from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur to approximately 3.5 hours, which is half the current time on a diesel train. This significant reduction in travel time makes the journey via the new ETS comparable to a road journey via car or tour coach.

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad is the entity advancing the completion of the electric train service in Malaysia, with the new ETS expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The completion of the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link is expected by the end of next year, providing an alternative travel option to road travel between the three cities.

With both the ETS and the RTS Link in operation, travellers from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, and vice versa, can travel via rail within four hours. This development is set to revolutionise travel between Johor Bahru, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, offering a more efficient, comfortable, and eco-friendly travel option.
