Reflecting on Previous Times
The Düsseldorf City Museum has unveiled an exciting new exhibition titled "Face of the City - 175 Years of Photographic History in Düsseldorf City Museum". This captivating display showcases the city's rich and diverse past through approximately 80,000 photographs and video works, carefully preserved in the museum's Photographic Collection.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive journey through Düsseldorf's history, presenting grand architecture and its ruins, peaceful protests, revolutionary unrest, and much more. It offers a glimpse into the lives of the city's people, from the upper-class residential culture to the so-called "common people" living in the Carlstadt, a neighbourhood that was not always one of the more affluent areas.
One of the most intriguing images on display is "View into Schulstraße", taken around 1900 by Hermann Krone. This photograph depicts the Carlstadt as a district of simple rental houses, offering a stark contrast to the affluent neighbourhoods of the time. Another notable work is "View into Schulstraße", taken by Peter Hubert Höltgen around the turn of the 20th century, which also portrays the humble dwellings of the residents.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Christoph Danelzik-Brüggemann, the head of the Photographic Collection at the city museum. It features numerous photographs and videos, showcasing horse and ox-drawn carriages, the first streetcars, and various modes of transportation that have shaped the city over the years.
