Reflections by Morizo | "24th of February"
In a heartfelt reflection, Akio Morizo, the current CEO of Toyota, shared his thoughts on his role in the company and the impact of a pivotal moment in Toyota's history. Nine years ago, on February 24, 2010, Morizo testified at a congressional hearing in the U.S., amidst a massive recall issue that originated in the country.
The day, now known as Toyota Restart Day, serves as a reminder of the feelings Morizo experienced during the hearing and related events. The determination he felt helped him understand his responsibility for Toyota around the world.
Morizo recalled feeling isolated and alone as he left Japan for the hearing. However, upon arrival, he was met by many people wearing "We love Toyota" t-shirts. These were employees and stakeholders from all over the U.S. who had rushed to be there, offering him emotional support during one of his most challenging moments.
Henry A. Waxman, the congressman who chaired the hearing, was present. Morizo expressed his profound gratitude to those who offered their support, saying, "Today, I was not alone. I attended the congressional hearing with everyone who gathered here. You have given me great strength."
Seeing this outpouring of support, Morizo realized that he had been worrying about criticism, but there were many people who supported him and Toyota. This realization led him to set February 24 as a special day, called "Toyota Restart Day."
In his reflection, Morizo emphasized the importance of focusing on customer first values and going to the source principle. He believes that with the support of Toyota's friends worldwide, they can create ever-better cars and regain customer trust.
Morizo also expressed his love for cars and Toyota, their partners, and friends. He sees his role as carrying not only the present, but also the past and the future of Toyota. He believes that Toyota is at a major turning point and that this moment requires a renewed commitment to their core values.
As Toyota moves forward, Morizo remains dedicated to upholding the trust placed in the company and continuing to create vehicles that meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
