German Basketball Player Dennis Schröder Subjected to Racist Taunts at EuroBasket

Dennis Schröder, a German basketball player, was the victim of racist taunts during the EuroBasket game against Lithuania. The incident, which took place in Tampere, Finland, involved monkey noises from fans in the arena.

Alan Ibrahimagic, the coach of the German team, expressed full solidarity with Schröder, while Schröder himself expressed his feelings more clearly on Instagram, stating that he wished the perpetrators had the courage to make the racist remarks outside the arena.

Ellen Schröder, Dennis Schröder's wife, condemned the harassment and addressed the suspects in the audience, wishing them that their parents had raised them better. She also made current hate comments public, posting screenshots of offensive and racist messages.

Ingo Weiss, the President of the German Basketball Association (DBB), also condemned the incident, stating that such behavior has no place in basketball or any other diverse and open community. The DBB announced that they would take sustainable action to prevent such incidents from happening again in future games.

FIBA, the governing body of international basketball, provided the relevant footage and information to the authorities regarding the racist incident. As a result, two individuals were ejected from the hall, and one person was identified and banned from the arena for the rest of the EuroBasket.

The Lithuanian Association, led by Mindaugas Balciunas, the President, condemned the racist incident. The Lithuanian team also apologized to Dennis Schröder for the racist taunts.

FIBA will contact the Lithuanian team delegation to inform them about the situation and support their efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games. Schröder shared a statement from the German association on Instagram, accompanied by sad emojis and the words: "Say 'no' to racism."

Dennis Schröder felt reminded of the racist abuse experienced by Brazilian football star Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to combat racism in sports and beyond.
