Regulation of Commercial Passenger and Cargo Transportation at a National Level
In a bid to enhance road safety and prevent accidents, the Police of North Rhine-Westphalia carried out inspections on commercial passenger and freight traffic across the state today. The operation, coordinated by the Düsseldorf Police Presidency, was supported by colleagues from eleven district police authorities, the customs office, the Federal Office for Logistics and Freight Traffic, and the municipalities.
The inspections took place at nine control points in Grevenbroich, Neuss, Rheurdt, Duisburg, Nettetal, Hünxe, Essen, Mülheim, and Wuppertal. The operation in Mülheim an der Ruhr focused specifically on the Rhine Street in the area of the harbor.
During the inspections, a total of 591 trucks were subjected to closer scrutiny. In Essen, 60 trucks were inspected, resulting in 23 violations, including insecure cargo, overloading, technical defects, and six prohibitions for continuing the journey. Two driver's licenses were secured as a result of the inspections in Essen.
In Mülheim an der Ruhr, 125 trucks were inspected, leading to 25 violations. These included 10 technical defects, two journeys under the influence of intoxicants, insecure cargo, and missing documents. Two trucks were prohibited from continuing their journey in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and three driver's licenses were seized.
Particular attention was paid to compliance with driving and rest times, as well as proper cargo securing during the inspections. Seven drivers were found to be under the influence of intoxicants during the inspections, underscoring the need for regular controls to maintain road safety.
The head of the operation, Police Director Reiner Schiffer, expressed satisfaction with the operation and emphasized its importance in increasing road safety and preventing accidents. The Federal Ministry of Transport forecasts a 39% increase in freight traffic by 2030, making such operations all the more crucial.
The goal of the operation is to reduce accidents involving trucks and ensure more safety for all road users. The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring that commercial traffic on North Rhine-Westphalia's roads is conducted safely and responsibly.
