Regulatory Pressure Targets Irresponsible UK Gambling Companies

In an effort to hold gambling operators accountable for their actions and promote responsible gambling practices, the charity Gambling with Lives has launched a petition. The petition, named 'Stop reckless gambling firms', was started yesterday and aims to collect 2,000 signatures. As of now, it has gathered 1,117 signatures.

The petition is part of an ongoing effort to address unregulated gambling and its associated harms. The charity argues that unchecked gambling can sometimes lead to tragic consequences, such as suicides. In the UK, 496 people take their lives every year due to gambling addiction.

One example of a company that has faced scrutiny is Gamesys, the parent company of Bally's, which earns almost £2 billion annually. Recently, Gamesys was fined £6 million for AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and social responsibility violations. However, the charity notes that the operator continued to promote new games and promotions to a customer who had just lost £10,000, demonstrating a lack of concern for the wellbeing of its customers.

Gambling with Lives advocates for stricter penalties for serious violations to discourage repeat offenses. The charity believes that fines for serious violations are not a proportional punishment for multibillion-pound gambling companies. For many of these companies, fines are considered a cost of business, and they do not feel the need to change their practices.

In an attempt to force gambling companies to improve their practices, Gambling with Lives is seeking public support to convince the UK Gambling Commission to revoke the licenses of serious violators. The charity argues that the threat of license revocation could be a more effective deterrent than current fines.

Steve Donoughue, the founder of Gambling with Lives, hopes that the petition will help prevent gambling-related deaths in Britain. The charity believes that by holding gambling operators accountable, they can work towards a safer gambling environment for everyone.
