Reinforcing Renewal: Five Berlin Districts Set to Receive Enhanced Support in Their Sustainable Development Efforts

Berlin is set to witness a significant transformation in the coming years, as the city's Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing has organised financing for improving living conditions in five Berlin districts. This initiative, known as the Sustainable Renewal program, will kickstart its first investments and construction projects as early as 2027.

The selected neighborhoods include Marzahn-Süd and Marzahn-Ost in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district, Tegel-Süd in the Reinickendorf district, the Ostseeviertel in the Lichtenberg district, along the Osloer Straße in the Mitte district, and Pankow-Süd.

The program's focus is on creating a long-term added value for society by combining social and ecological investment. It aims to address the often-lacking funding for climate protection measures and energy projects, providing a crucial foundation for these projects.

Urban Development Senator Christian Gaebler emphasised that the funding is an important tool for improving living conditions over a longer period. The program opens up the possibility of implementing climate adaptation and energy transition projects in the neighbourhoods, ensuring they are more resilient to the consequences of climate change.

The first projects in these neighbourhoods will involve the climate-proof redesign of green spaces, street spaces, city squares, and playgrounds. Funds from urban development will also be used to improve social infrastructure and climate-proof public spaces.

Cooperation with the districts is a key factor in the success of these projects. The program particularly aims to support disadvantaged neighbourhoods or those in a phase of transformation. Developed Integrated Urban Development Concepts are necessary before funds can be deployed in the selected neighbourhoods, and these concepts must be politically approved by both the districts and the state before implementation.

The Sustainable Renewal program also aims to ecologically and socially advance Berlin neighbourhoods. Projects that strengthen neighbourhoods, improve education and sports offerings, and enhance public spaces can be implemented through the program. These projects are expected to start as early as 2027, marking a new era of sustainable urban development in Berlin.
