Reinjured defensive tackle Carter of the Bills predicted to be sidelined for the entire season following an Achilles tendon rupture, according to Associated Press sources.
In a blow to the Buffalo Bills' defensive line, backup defensive tackle DeWayne Carter has torn his Achilles tendon during a practice session on Wednesday. The injury was confirmed by two people with knowledge of the incident to The Associated Press.
Carter, a third-round pick from Duke in the 2024 NFL Draft, has already undergone surgery for the injury and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. His absence comes at a challenging time for the Bills, as they are already dealing with the loss of veteran free agent addition Larry Ogunjobi, who will miss the first six games of the season due to an NFL suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancers.
The injury further depletes Buffalo's depth at the defensive tackle position. However, the team may promote a practice squad player to fill Carter's roster spot. Currently, the Bills have four healthy interior defensive linemen on the roster, including veterans Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones, and rookies TJ Sanders and Deone Walker.
While Carter's injury leaves a gaping hole, the Bills may find solace in the return of Jordan Phillips, who signed with the team last week and is currently on the practice squad, serving as a backup defensive tackle. Phillips, an 11-year veteran, has previously served as a backup defensive tackle for the Bills for three stints.
Phillips missed the entire offseason before signing with Buffalo, but he is expected to need time to get into game shape. Despite this, his experience and proven track record could prove invaluable for the Bills as they navigate the upcoming season.
The SchultzReport first reported the news of Phillips' signing earlier in the day. The practice squad of the Buffalo Bills also includes 11-year veteran Jordan Phillips, who is returning for a fourth stint with the team.
The team has yet to reveal the extent of Carter's injury, but his absence, combined with Ogunjobi's suspension, presents a formidable challenge for the Bills as they prepare for the upcoming season. It remains to be seen how they will address these losses and maintain their competitive edge on the defensive line.
