Relocating headquarters from Rhode Island to Boston Seaport, by Hasbro.
Hasbro Moves Headquarters to Boston, Leaving Pawtucket After Over Two Decades
Boston, Massachusetts is set to welcome a new high-profile tenant as toy giant Hasbro announced its decision to move its headquarters from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The relocation, which ends a year of speculation about Hasbro's future in Rhode Island, is considered a significant addition to the consumer brands in the Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
The move comes after Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey expressed her support for Hasbro's decision to create hundreds of jobs in the state. Hasbro will lease seven floors of a building near the Menino Convention Center in Boston, making it the new home for at least 700 full-time employees by the end of 2026.
Pawtucket, however, is not taking the news lightly. Mayor Don Grebien expressed deep disappointment with Hasbro's decision, stating that the city did everything possible to keep the company in Pawtucket. Despite this setback, Grebien remains resilient, expressing confidence that the city will come back even stronger.
Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee also expressed disappointment with the company's decision, stating that they did everything they could to keep Hasbro in the state. In an effort to prevent the move, Rhode Island offered Hasbro an undeveloped parcel in Providence for $1, but it was not enough to prevent the move to Massachusetts.
The city of Boston is known for its business-to-business companies, making it an attractive destination for Hasbro. The relocation is expected to further boost the city's reputation as the economic center of New England.
Mike Toole, the managing editor for the Boston news, has worked in the WBZ-TV newsroom for over 20 years. Prior to his current role, Toole wrote and produced news and sports at WABC-TV in New York.
Pawtucket worked with architects and developers to put together a proposal for a new Hasbro facility on the banks of the Blackstone River, but it seems the offer was not enough to keep the company in Rhode Island.
Despite leaving its long-time home, Hasbro has promised to continue supporting Hasbro Children's Hospital with annual donations and to keep recruiting from Rhode Island's colleges and universities. The relocation is expected to spark competition between Boston's Seaport and Back Bay neighborhoods as they vie for high-profile tenants in the future.
