Remains of a missing German individual discovered in Lake Como - Remainings of a German individual traced in Lake Como

In a shocking turn of events, Lake Como, one of Europe's deepest lakes, has once again claimed two lives in less than a year. The latest victim, a well-known restaurateur and organiser of after-work parties in Bühl, Baden-Württemberg, lost his life on August 25, 2025, while attempting to save his two children who had fallen overboard near Dorio on the eastern shore.

The man, who had Italian roots, was found at a depth of 220 meters, a grim reminder of a similar incident that occurred in July 2024, involving a 51-year-old German man.

The search for the man's body was hindered by adverse weather conditions, but his tragic end was ultimately confirmed. The shock is felt not just in Bühl, but in the whole region, according to Mayor Hubert Schnurr.

Lake Como, located about 80 kilometers north of Milan, is known for its breathtaking beauty and serene atmosphere. However, it is also one of the deepest lakes in Europe, with a maximum depth of over 400 meters. Particularly in the northern part, strong waves can be generated by changing winds, making it a potentially dangerous body of water.

The incident has been described as a "huge shock" by Mayor Schnurr, and the community is left mourning the loss of a well-loved figure. The man's children, who miraculously survived the ordeal, are undoubtedly traumatised by the events.

As the region grapples with this tragedy, memories of the 2024 incident involving the 51-year-old German man resurface. It serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that lurk beneath the surface of the seemingly tranquil Lake Como.

The community is urged to exercise caution when enjoying the lake, and to always prioritise safety when engaging in water activities. The loss of these two men is a sombre reminder of the importance of being vigilant and responsible when it comes to water safety.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims, and to the community of Bühl as they cope with this tragic loss. May they find solace in the memories they shared with these two remarkable men.
