Remains of Missing Father Discovered in Lake Como, North Italy
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 55-year-old man from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, lost his life while trying to save his children from drowning in Lake Como. The incident occurred on Monday near Dorio on the eastern shore of Lake Como.
The man, who was a well-known restaurateur in his hometown of Bühl, was on a rented boat with his wife and two children when the children accidentally fell overboard. For unknown reasons, the man jumped into the water to rescue them. Despite managing to save his children, the man did not resurface.
The search operations for the man continued uninterrupted, even amidst adverse weather conditions. Two divers eventually retrieved the body from the surface level. The body was found at a depth of 220 meters, using a remotely operated underwater robot.
The news of the man's tragic demise has caused shock in Baden-Württemberg and beyond. Bühl, a city with approximately 30,000 inhabitants located between the Rhine plain, vineyards, and the Black Forest, is in mourning. Mayor Hubert Schnurr expressed his condolences and stated that the incident has affected the entire region.
This tragic incident is reminiscent of a similar accident in July 2024, where a 51-year-old German man died after trying to help his son swim in Lake Como. Especially in the northern part, changing winds can generate strong wave action in Lake Como, making it a potentially dangerous body of water.
The man who died in Lake Como was of Italian descent. He was a guesthouse owner and was known for organizing after-work parties in his city. The body is now available to the judicial authorities for necessary examinations.
