Remuneration, Offenses, and Merz: Remarks by Alice Weidel during Summer Interview in Veracity Verification
In recent days, several claims made by Alice Weidel, a prominent figure in German politics, have come under scrutiny. Here's a fact-check on some of her statements:
The Center for Political Beauty, which organized the protest against Weidel, did not receive any funding from the federal government in 2021. This protest action was not "pushed" with tax money through NGOs, as Weidel suggested.
Weidel's claim about knife crime in Germany being a migrant problem imported over the last 10 years is unsubstantiated. There is no evidence to support the assertion that the rise in knife crime is directly linked to migration.
Weidel's claim that three quarters of German recipients have a migration background is incorrect. The actual figure is significantly lower.
Weidel's claim that Paragraph 18 of the Asylum Act requires the rejection of anyone who comes to Germany from a safe third country is inaccurate. This paragraph can be overridden under certain circumstances, such as when Germany is responsible for conducting the asylum procedure under EU law. Weidel omits this in her statement.
Weidel's claim that half of the benefit recipients are foreigners who have never paid into the social system is mostly false. The Federal Employment Agency does not have data on unemployment benefit recipients with dual citizenship.
Weidel's claim that foreign people do not contribute to the social system in Germany is misleading. As of the fourth quarter of 2024, around 5.7 million foreigners were employed in Germany, about half of them.
Weidel's claim about "remigration" being solely about observing law and order contradicts the statements in the AfD election program for the federal election, which also includes changing laws.
The GEG, also known as the Heating Law, was one of the biggest controversial issues during the Traffic Light government's term. Details of the new Building Energy Act, which aims to reverse the technology bans of the last amendment, are yet to be clarified, but Economics Minister Katherina Reiche has announced plans to abolish the operating ban for heating boilers.
The coalition agreement includes plans to temporarily suspend family reunification for subsidiarily protected persons for two years and extend the citizenship process after three years. The Berlin-led CDU has set an internal target of 40,000 naturalizations for the year 2025, but this has nothing to do with Friedrich Merz as Federal Chancellor.
The claim that 215,000 Syrians in Germany are subject to deportation is incorrect. As of June 30, 2025, there were only 11,000 Syrian nationals subject to deportation in Germany, and the vast majority of them have a suspension of deportation.
The AfD faction has not made its allowances public, and it is not possible to determine whether the allowances of the AfD faction are at the same level as other factions. The Greens and The Left make their allowances public and pay less than the AfD faction.
The Bundesrat approved the temporary suspension of family reunification in July. The protest action against Weidel was not funded by tax money.
In summary, several of Alice Weidel's claims have been found to be inaccurate or misleading. It is crucial for political figures to present factual information to the public.
