Pope Leo XIV Appoints New Members to the Vatican Dicastery for Clergy

Pope Leo XIV has made several significant appointments to the Vatican Dicastery for Clergy, a department that provides guidance and assistance to bishops in matters related to the recruitment, training, and continuing education of diocesan priests and permanent deacons.

The South Korean Cardinal Lazarus You Heung-sik continues to lead the Dicastery, and the Pope has appointed twelve new consultants to join him. Among these new consultants are two Catholic sisters: Sister Nathalie Becquart and Sister Veronica Openibo, who both teach at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Sister Iuliana Sarosi, a professor of psychology at the same university, is another new consultant.

In addition to the sisters, the Pope has named eight cardinals and 14 bishops to five-year terms as members of the Dicastery. Cardinal Frank Leo of Toronto and Bishop Edward M. Lohse of Kalamazoo, Michigan, are among the new members. Bishop Luis Manuel Alí Herrera, secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, has also been named a member.

Among the new consultants is the U.S.-born Trappistine Mother Martha Driscoll, who serves as the superior of the women's community at the Tre Fontane Monastery in Rome.

Pope Leo XIV has also renewed the membership of the Vatican Dicastery for Clergy, ensuring its continued guidance and support for the clergy worldwide. These appointments and renewals underscore the Pope's commitment to the spiritual and professional development of the clergy, a crucial aspect of the Church's mission.
