Renowned fashion icon Giorgio Armani has sadly passed away.
Giorgio Armani, the renowned Italian fashion designer who revolutionized the fashion industry with his casual, elegant, and simple style, passed away at the age of 91.
Armani was born in the small town of Piacenza, Italy, and his mother valued clothing, even during wartime. After studying medicine for two years, he realized it was not his calling and transitioned to working in a department store.
Armani's big break came in 1980 when he dressed Richard Gere in "American Gigolo," catapulting him into Hollywood stardom. His style in women's collections was characterized by feminine pantsuits and understated sexiness.
Hollywood celebrities like Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, and Cate Blanchett have worn Armani on screen and at the Oscars. He presented new collections four times a year in Milan and twice a year in Paris.
Armani founded his own company, Giorgio Armani SpA, in the mid-1970s with his life partner Sergio Galeotti. The corporation he founded is now worth many billions and employs around 8,700 people, with more than 2,000 stores and an annual turnover of over 2.3 billion euros.
However, the future of the Armani brand is uncertain as Armani did not commit to a successor. The succession plan involves a gradual transition to close associates and family members, including his nieces Silvana and Roberta, his sister Rosanna and her son Andrea Camerana, as well as his right-hand man Pantaleo Dell'Orco, with no clear single successor declared before Armani's death.
Armani was hailed as a monolith of fashion and a rock in the fast-paced fashion industry. He is credited with reinventing the jacket and making it acceptable to wear a t-shirt with a suit. His style was considered casual, elegant, and simple.
This month, a museum exhibition in Milan, Italy, dedicated to Armani's life's work will take place at the Pinacoteca di Brera, which is located right next to Armani's residence. Armani spent his last summer in Saint-Tropez, France, and indulged in luxuries, including houses in St. Moritz and the Caribbean island of Antigua.
Armani's villa is located on the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria, almost the southernmost point of Italy. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by his hometown's university in May 2023. Armani leaves behind two nieces and a nephew.
Rest in peace, Giorgio Armani. Your impact on the fashion industry will never be forgotten.
