Prominent Vietnamese Theatre Director Pham Thi Thanh Passes Away at 87

Pham Thi Thanh, a renowned figure in the Vietnamese theatre scene, has sadly passed away at the age of 87. Throughout her distinguished career, Thanh made significant contributions to the world of theatre, both in Vietnam and internationally.

Born into nobility in 1938, Thanh's father was the head of Emperor Bao Dai's cabinet. She joined the Central Art Troupe at the tender age of 14 and dedicated her life to the theatre. After seven years of studying theatre directing in the Soviet Union, Thanh returned to Vietnam and played a crucial role in establishing the Vietnam Youth Theatre.

Throughout her career, Thanh directed over 200 productions, nearly 20 of which won gold or silver medals at national theatre festivals. She is best known for introducing prominent playwright Luu Quang Vu to the scene and directing over 20 of Vu's plays for art troupes across the country.

Thanh's contributions reached beyond Vietnam's borders, serving on the Executive Committee of the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People. She also chaired ASSITEJ Việt Nam, an organization focused on theatre for children and young people.

In addition to her work in the theatre, Thanh served as Vice President of UNESCO's Vietnamese branch and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Việt Nam Union of Literature and Arts Association. She was the first female director to receive the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2012.

Throughout her career, Thanh directed many award-winning productions, including the first performances of Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet and Moliere's comedy The Bourgeois Gentleman in Vietnam.

Thanh is survived by her children with her late ex-husband, People's Artist Dào Mộng Long. Some of her students who later became famous artists include People's Artist Lan Huong, People's Artist Le Khanh, People's Artist Minh Hang, People's Artist Anh Tu, People's Artist Ngoc Huyen, and Merited Artist Chi Trung.

Thanh's funeral will be held on September 8. She was named a People's Artist in 1997 and served as a deputy of the Hà Nội People's Council. Thanh will be remembered as a trailblazer in the Vietnamese theatre world and a dedicated artist who touched the lives of many.
