Giorgio Armani, the renowned Italian designer known for his signature power suiting and influence on Hollywood's biggest stars, has passed away at the age of 91. The news was announced by the Armani Group on Thursday.

Born in the Italian town of Piacenza, about an hour outside of Milan, Armani dipped his toes into the fashion world in 1957 as a window dresser at La Rinascente, the famed department store in Milan. He fully immersed himself in clothing in 1964, when he designed menswear for the department store.

In 1975, Armani formed his brand with architect Sergio Galeotti. His first menswear and womenswear collection introduced a new, more relaxed form of power suiting, setting the stage for his future success.

Armani's designs have been worn by numerous Hollywood stars, including Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. His influence extended beyond the world of fashion, as he launched numerous brands over the decades, including Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange, Armani Jeans lines, a home décor line, and a fragrance collection.

The Armani Group was valued between $9 billion and nearly $12 billion in 2024, with reported revenues of about 2.3 billion euros and around 8,700 employees. The successor to Armani has not been officially named, but a succession plan involves a gradual transition to close associates and family members, including his longtime trusted collaborator Leo Dell'Orco and nieces Silvana and Roberta Armani, as well as other family members and key executives.

The celebration of the Armani brand's 50th anniversary was planned for Milan Fashion Week this year. An exhibition titled "Giorgio Armani Privé 2005-2025: Twenty Years of Haute Couture" is running until December 28, 2025, at Armani/Silos, Milan.

A special capsule collection called "That's So Armani" pays homage to Armani's signature designs. The Armani brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, and despite the loss of its founder, it continues to be a significant force in the fashion industry.

Rest in peace, Il Signor Armani. Your legacy will live on.
