Renowned Italian fashion guru Giorgio Armani succumbed to death.
Giorgio Armani, Iconic Italian Fashion Designer, Passes Away at 91
Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer, passed away at the age of 91. Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani rose to become one of the most influential figures in the fashion industry.
Armani's journey began in humble circumstances. He started his career in a small town near Milan, and later co-founded the Giorgio Armani fashion house with Sergio Galeotti in 1975. Galeotti, an Italian architect, became Armani's lifelong partner and business partner.
In 1975, Armani introduced his first women's collection, which did away with traditional silhouettes and conveyed a masculine touch to symbolize strength. Stylish suits characterized by clean lines and classic colours became his trademark. Armani's fashion empire expanded to include hotels, perfumes, and other products such as coffee, chocolate, and jam.
Armani was among the first European designers to open a store in Los Angeles and designed costumes for several Hollywood films. He dressed athletes, including the Italian national team for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, and even owned a basketball team in Milan.
Armani's fashion empire is worth over $10 billion, placing him among the world's top 200 billionaires, according to Forbes. In 2024, the company generated €2.3 billion ($2.7 billion) in revenue. Armani was the sole major shareholder of the firm and had no children to inherit it.
Armani's designs were known for their elegance and creativity. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed him as an "icon," while Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani referred to him as a "timeless talent" and "Made in Italy ambassador in the world." Donatella Versace, a fashion designer and board member of the Versace fashion house, expressed her sorrow at Armani's death.
Grey was a central colour in Armani's creations, and he even created his own hue called "greige." Armani was one of the first fashion designers to ban emaciated models from his catwalks, emphasizing that he aimed for his designs to meet the needs of the people.
In 2024, Armani stated that he had no plans to retire and wished to lead his company for a couple more years. Despite his passing, Armani's legacy will continue to inspire generations of fashion enthusiasts.
Rest in peace, Giorgio Armani.
