Rescue team and helpers transport a casualty from the crumbled temple in Basantapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu, Nepal, following a catastrophic earthquake on April 25, 2015.
In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Nepal a year ago, the country continues to grapple with the aftermath. Over one million people were displaced, and more than 10,000 casualties were reported, including nearly 9,000 deaths and 22,000 injuries.
The disaster resulted in extensive damage, with at least 800,000 buildings being affected, many of which remain covered with temporary tarps or are uninhabitable. The quakes also wreaked havoc on Nepal's historic sites, damaging four World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu valley.
Spain-based photographer Omar Havana has been documenting the slow struggle toward recovery in Nepal through his book project, Endurance. His work provides a visual account of the country's ongoing struggles, focusing on the everyday lives of the Nepali people as they navigate the challenges of rebuilding their lives and their homes.
Havana's images offer a poignant portrayal of the Nepali people's fight against the devastation caused by the earthquakes. His photographs show the resilience of the Nepali people, as they continue to rebuild their lives despite the ongoing hardships.
However, Havana's work also suggests that the Nepali people feel that they were given a lesson on life but were not given adequate attention by the world. His photographs reveal that while the world's media focused on football matches and famous personalities, Nepal's struggle against the earthquake devastation was often overlooked.
The financial support for Nepal's reconstruction includes initiatives like HerdeckeHilft, which has been involved in rebuilding schools and organizing medical camps since 2015, and Rotary International, which contributed to the rebuilding of schools in Nepal.
Despite these efforts, many villages in Nepal remain devastated, and tens of thousands of people lack basic services. Havana's work serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the Nepali people and the need for continued support and attention.
Omar Havana's book project, Endurance, is currently available for support on Kickstarter. By backing this project, you can help ensure that the world does not forget about Nepal and its ongoing struggles in the aftermath of the earthquakes.
