Residential and commercial buildings shrouded in thick smoke due to an underground fire reported by Wedel
On Friday, August 1, 2025, a significant fire incident occurred in a residential and commercial building on Bahnhofstraße in the town of Wedel. The incident, which was classified as a FEU G (Large Standard Fire), caused a stir in the area and prompted a swift response from emergency services.
The Wedel fire department was alerted at 2:33 PM, and approximately 60 volunteers from the Wedel and Holm fire departments were quickly on the scene. An employee of the bank located in the building noticed the smell of smoke and promptly called the emergency number, allowing for a timely response.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire primarily in the basement, where a burning electrical distribution box was located. To tackle the blaze, several pressure ventilators and a smoke extraction device were used for ventilation and smoke removal.
Despite the smoke spreading throughout the basement and into the apartments, no injuries have been reported as of 4:30 PM. A police cordon was set up due to curious passersby approaching the incident site, ensuring the safety of the public and the emergency responders.
The cleanup operations, which were lengthy due to the complex layout of the building, are expected to continue until approximately 5:30 PM. Mayor Julia Fisauli-Aalto visited the site to monitor the operations, and the Wedel Ordnungsamt assisted with accommodating residents as the building had to be power-shut down.
