Residential art gallery transforms into an ever-changing masterpiece: David Alhadeff's personal residence in Hollywood
The Future Perfect, a renowned platform for championing American contemporary designers, has made some significant moves in recent times. Founded by David Alhadeff in 2003 as a collectible furniture and objects store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the gallery has since expanded its presence across the United States.
In New York, The Future Perfect has moved from its temporary location in Williamsburg to a permanent home in the St Luke's Townhouse in the West Village. This new space promises to showcase the gallery's boundary-breaking offerings, particularly in the form of site-specific architectural works.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, The Future Perfect operates Casa Perfect, a residential gallery concept that began in a modernist house in the Hollywood Hills. The gallery's founder, David Alhadeff, now resides in The Goldwyn House, a 1916 residence bearing the signature of architect Arthur S. Heineman. The Goldwyn House, with its old-style Hollywood mansion ambience, towers over a sweeping estate with gardens and a swimming pool.
The interior design of The Goldwyn House is a testament to The Future Perfect's eclectic style. One-off, spectacular pieces from various designers adorn the space. Chris Wolston, for instance, designed an eccentric, bronze-murals-and-tiles powder room, while Christophe Delcourt created stunningly upholstered, bespoke soft seating. Olivia Cognet designed a glazed outdoor firepit that resembles a volcano in full eruption, and Christopher Farr crafted an Art Deco design-inspired rug collection.
The Future Perfect's interiors are constantly evolving and changing. Rooms are emptied out, new rugs brought in, and paint and wallpaper re-done. This dynamic approach allows the gallery to showcase the studio-created works and one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces in homeware, lighting, textiles, and wall coverings that it represents.
In addition to these permanent locations, The Future Perfect has established a presence in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Casa Perfect has moved to Elvis Presley's former Beverly Hills home in the Trousdale Estates neighborhood and a Raul F. Garduno-designed residence nearby.
The gallery has also made strides in recognising and supporting emerging talent. Anina Major, a Bahamian visual artist, was recently announced as the winner of The Future Perfect's inaugural namesake prize. Major's sculptural ceramic creations reference the straw weaving practices of her homeland and echo wider histories and culture.
Floris Wubben, another designer represented by The Future Perfect, has a new kiln to start making full large-scale dining tables in glazed ceramic. This exciting development promises to further expand the gallery's offerings and solidify its position as a leader in contemporary design.
As The Future Perfect continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to highlighting the careers of some of today's boldest creative talents, including Lindsey Adelman, Piet Hein Eek, and Chris Wolston. The gallery's move to permanent locations in New York and Los Angeles, as well as its continued support of emerging artists, marks an exciting new chapter in its journey.
